Vision:

The Department of English envisions becoming a center of academic excellence and intellectual inquiry, renowned for its contributions to the field of English studies. It aims to cultivate a transformative learning environment that nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural understanding. By promoting a deep appreciation for literature and language, the department strives to produce graduates who are well-equipped to succeed in diverse professional fields and contribute to society.

The Department of English visualizes and aspires to work in alignment with its mission. This is the biggest challenge as it is said achieving the goal is easy but continuously performing to the excellent mark is most difficult task. We seek to foster knowledge and a love of literature in our students. We will teach a variety of literary, analytical, pedagogical, and theoretical skills. We will teach students to speak, read, and write effectively. We will encourage students to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned. We will encourage a love of learning and an appreciation for a liberal education.

By creating a vision for teaching and educating purpose we craft an “ideal image” of what we must work upon and accomplish in our classrooms. Clear vision gives confidence develops confidence in teacher and finally it even surpasses in the students who see themselves as professionals in teaching and various other fields.

We believe that the best way to do that is to introduce the students to the greatest writers—to what the Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold called “the best that has been thought and said” (and of course the list of these fine works is not fixed forever but grows and changes as new thinkers emerge and older ones who were neglected are discovered). Arnold claimed that study of those great works would turn “a stream of fresh and free thought upon our stock notions and habits, which we now follow staunchly but mechanically, vainly imagining that there is a virtue in following them staunchly which makes up for the mischief of following them mechanically.” The purpose of a liberal education is just this attempt to rethink important questions about the world and humanity and to do so in a “liberal” (meaning “free”) manner—releasing, as Arnold says, “fresh and free thought.” Liberal education is liberating to the mind.

Mission:

In its teaching, the Department of English seeks to provide students with an education of the highest quality in literature written in English. It encourages students throughout their programmes to enable them to progress expeditiously to their degrees and to gain the maximum benefit from their experience. BA English Literature imparts basic knowledge of the English language and literature of different eras and ages.
