About the Department of Physics

Physics is the most fundamental aspect of science that contributes to the development of technological infrastructure and provides the trained personnel to exploit scientific advancements and discoveries. The Department of Physics, C.M.P Degree College, Prayagraj has been one of the well-known centres for higher studies in the field of physical sciences in the country and was established in 1950 since the time of the establishment of the College. Dr S B L Srivastava, a passionate teacher, was the founder and Head of the Department of Physics. Under his dynamic leadership, the Department of Physics started the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree program in 1950. There is thirteen sanctioned faculty position. At present, the department has eleven faculty members with diverse expertise in teaching and research as well. All the faculty members are highly qualified and all of them have vast teaching and research experience in the field of theoretical and experimental physics. Dr Rakesh Kumar is the convener of the Department.

The aim of the Department is to become a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary and cutting-edge research and teaching activities in diverse fields of Physical sciences.

Our research spans Quantum Optics, Quantum Information, nonlinear optics, Laser Breakdown Spectroscopy, Molecular  Spectroscopy, Photoacoustic spectroscopy, condensed matter physics, photonics, Renewable energy particularly Thermoelectric and Photovoltaic, Plasma Physics, Biophysics, Soft condensed matter physics, Computational PhysicsNanoscience and Nanotechnology, Shock waves, Aerodynamics, Hydrodynamics and Astrophysics.

The Department started the Master of Science (M.Sc.) Physics programme in 2018-19 with two specializations Nonlinear Optics and Electronics.

Our college has been granted funding under the DBT STAR college scheme in the year 2019. The B.Sc. Physics laboratory has been upgraded by utilising this grant. The Department organises various extracurricular activities for students under this scheme to enhance the knowledge as well as overall personality development of our students. The total number of sanctioned seats for the B.Sc. program is 437 and for the M.Sc. program is 50.  In order to encourage and orient postgraduate students towards research, the students are allotted the advanced research topic by the faculty members in the form of a dissertation in their final year.

The Department also offers a certificate course in Energy literacy for all the students of our College. Alumni of the department have excelled at many prestigious higher educational institutions including IIT Kanpur, IIT BHU, IIT Indore, Banaras Hindu University, University of Hyderabad, Delhi University and many other global as well as national scientific laboratories.

Currently, five research projects are running in the department sponsored by the University Grant Commission (UGC) and Council of Science & Technology, U.P.

ATOMICA

In 2018, the Physics Society ‘ATOMICA’ was formed by the faculty members of the Department of Physics, C.M.P. College, Prayagraj. The purpose to form the society was to create a separate platform, other than classroom teaching and learning, to discuss various innovations in Physics and to bring out hidden qualities of students by organising science-based co-curricular activities like seminars, debates, quizzes, poster competitions, project making etc. The details about "ATOMICA" can be seen on the Google site https://sites.google.com/view/atomica-cmp/home .
