Department of Sanskrit was established in 1950 under the headship of Pt. Shyam Narayan. Pt. Shyam Narayan was a Vadic Scholar and had Command over linguistics too. He was a good orator and had a brilliant command over Hindi, English and Sanskrit languages. Later he become MLC and worked for the upliftment of higher secondary teachers.

Dr. Shail Km. Srivastava was the second to join the Department. She had been a scholar of Philosophy. Acharya Uma Shankar Jankar ‘Shastri’, the third lecturer of the Department was traditionally sound. He was a master of oriental studies as well as of modern Sanskrit. He was a profound Scholar of Music and Hindi also. Dr. Avinash Chandra joined the Dept in late fifties. Dr. Avinash Chandra had a background of  Hindi literature too. Dr. Anand Kumar Srivastava is widely traveled person (Both within India & Abroad) and has 15 books and 40 research papers to his credit. He is a scholar of modern Sanskrit poetics. Dr. Srivastva worked on Minor and Major Research Projects sanctioned by UGC New Delhi. He is honoured with many prestigious awards. Dr. Neelam Srivastava belonged to the philosophy group of Sanskrit and has one book in her credit. Dr. Shashank Chandra basically came from Philosophy school and has written two books and several research paper published in reputed journals.

Presently threre are seven faculty members in the department with different area of specialization ie Dr. Surendra Pal Singh, Dr. Dipti Vishnu, Dr. Kiran Verma, Dr. Manoj Kumar are from literature, Dr. Bhanu Prakash Tripathi from Ved, Dr.Vijay Bahadur from Philosophy streams. Dr. Satya Prakash Srivastava is basically from  Literature school but did so much work in the  field of Epigraphy and Palaeography. They all are Ph.D. holders and qualified  NET/JRF.

Convener Dr. S.P. Singh has nine books almost 60 research papers and more than ten prestigious prizes of the field. Dr.Singh has worked on Minor Research Project sanctioned by UGC, which has been published.  Dr. Dipti Vishnu has one, Dr. Satyaprakash Srivastava has two, while Dr. Manoj Kumar has one book to his credit.

Department of Sanskrit has more than 600 students in UG and almost 40 students in PG and research, out of which 5 students are selected as Lecturer in Inter Colleges and 2 had been selected as assistant professor in degree colleges. 

Department of Sanskrit has a well-established CENTRE FOR SPOKEN SANSKRIT in which aspirants of any age-group may practice to speak Sanskrit. This course is completely free of cost.

Almost every year A NATYA WORKSHOP  is organized by the Sanskrit Department, followed by a SANSKRIT DRAMA being staged at different prestigious stages of the city , in which the professors and students of the Sanskrit Department perform the various role.

A three-days inter collegiate Competitions TRIVENIKA MAHOTSAV is also being organized every year by the Sanskrit Department, in which along with the SHASTRAARTH on the classical subjects, the Shalaaka, Geet , General knowledge competitions also being organized during these three days. Winners of SHASTRAARTH competitions are awarded with TRIVENIKA GAURAV SAMMAAN.

            The Sanskrit Department organizes SANSKRIT DAY and SANSKRIT PAKHWAADA on the occasion of shraavni Purnima every year, in which different competitions are organized for students ie.   debate, sanskrit songs, shlok-paath etc.

Department of Sanskrit frequently organizes academic and research oriented activities. Among these, lectures of Subject-  specialist scholars and workshops are being organised.

          In this practice, department had organised an INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR on 26-27 November 2022, in which more than 350 scholars participated while almost 200 participants presented their research papers in 10 different sessions.

          Department of Sanskrit also publish a RESEARCH JOURNAL 'VAANGMAYAM' (ISSN: 2278 - 0084) a Peer Reviewed Research Journal , which is one of the prestigious Sanskrit related research journals in the country.  Dr. Surendra Pal Singh, Convener of Sanskrit Department, CMP College, is its editor and all other departmental professors are its co-editors. So far 11 issues of this journal have been published and prestigious research papers of about 20 Vice-Chancellors/President's Awardee Professors and hundreds of scholars have been published.

          Sanskrit Department made a MOU  on June 17, 2022 with TRIVENIKA Sanskrit Parishad, Prayagraj. Both bodies are regularly organising academic activities for the development of Sanskrit.

           The department has a small library. Apart from this it has  a large numbr of books in central Library.
