Department Of Music

The Department of Music, initially established in 1955 by Sri Banwari Ji, began with both vocal and instrumental divisions, featuring Sitar and Tabla. Over the years, it saw notable leadership transitions, with Dr. Madhuri Saxena taking the helm in 1985, followed by Dr. Shobha Srivastava and Dr. Padmaja Singh. In the present, Dr. Rashmi Gupta has been heading the department since 2018, succeeding Dr. Padmaja Singh, who initially joined as a lecturer in 2003 and has been responsible for teaching Sitar.

Currently, the department is in the process of filling three vacant faculty positions for Vocal and Tabla. Dr. Nidhi Srivastava and Dr. Akansha Pal, guest lecturers for Tabla and Vocal, are currently overseeing the teaching responsibilities.

The department offers undergraduate courses in music, encompassing all three streams of Vocal, Sitar, and Tabla. Additionally, it has aspirations to introduce postgraduate courses (MA) in the near future. There are plans to initiate a D. Phil. Program once the University of Allahabad grants permission.

In the last five years, the department has witnessed consistent growth in student enrollment: 29 in 2017-2018, 44 in 2018-2019, 48 in 2019-2020, 60 in 2020-2021, and 55 in the 2021-22 session.

The department is actively engaged in organizing numerous cultural and departmental music programs throughout the year. It also participates in special events like Foundation Day, Independence Day, and Republic Day. In addition, the department hosts competitive programs for music students from the University of Allahabad and its constituent colleges.

Both students and faculty in the department share a close bond reminiscent of the traditional Guru Shishya Parampara in music. The dedicated faculty members work tirelessly to ensure a bright future for the students in their care.
