History

The Department of Psychology opened in the CMP Degree College in the year 1978. It started as a girl's wing of the CMP College near Nawab Yusuf Road. Dr Saroj Narula was the founder Head of the Psychology Department.  The Department of Psychology merged with the main campus in July 2010 and became co add since then. The psychology department of the college is a sister department of the Psychology department of Allahabad University and follows its courses on a regular basis. Since 1978  the college has produced neck and neck quality students in psychology. This  amounts to  recordable history and prideful documentation that not a single student failed in the final year psychology graduation course in CMP.

In November 2017 three more eligible faculties joined the department of the college.  Dr. Ruchika Varma (PhD from AU), Dr, Mahesh Kumar Maurya (PhD, PDF from BHU), Dr. Ranjana Tiwari (PhD from BHU, RCI registered Clinical Psychologist). The three new faculties increased the strength of the department and as a result  Post Graduate Programme in 2018 were started. Student's strengths and qualities both are in progression. One more feather got added to the hat of the psychology department as the PhD. Programme has newly been introduced in the current session 2023-24.

The Department has a well-equipped Psychology Laboratory with all instruments and testing materials required for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The  departmental library is well stocked. The department also has a computer lab for engaging students in E- experiments involving ICT techniques.

13. To introduce students to the fundamentals of experimentation and testing in psychology so that they may conduct simple test and experiments and learn report writing skills.

14. To familiarise students with essential statistical tools and research methodology.

15. To equip students with specialised behavioural skills which they may use in clinical settings or in day to day functioning.

16. Encouraging students to master and become proficient in the basics of psychology which gives them a competitive edge over others in fields like management, organisational behaviour, medicine, physiology etc.

VISION

 The Vision of  the Psychology Department is to promote better understanding of self and interpersonal relationship. Education itself has aim to serve humanity and psyche of every human being needs direction. The department strives to stimulate creative mind of youth, develop effective communication skills and train psychology students to implement applied aspects of psychological processes in society.  Curriculum of psychology focuses to prepare youth to face market force and use psychological knowledge for personal and professional success.  

MISSION

The department perpetually works towards employing new and innovative ways of studying the discipline of psychology. To promote intellectual excellence, the psychology syllabus is designed to expose students to the technical training of the digital world while follow the standard syllabus of the University of Allahabad.  The Department facilitates internships and applied aspects of psychology practical and experiential learning to promote connection with the community. The department imparts diversity in research work by making it a part of the curriculum to develop research proposals. The Department encourages balanced synchronization between theory and practice of psychology.

ALUMNI

The alumni members of the psychology department are placed in different professions like teaching, counsellors, mental health professionals etc. Psychology remains a discipline of great interest to students and so students opt for higher studies in psychology. Many alumni members are doing research in psychology. Recently two alumni members from UG courses were appointed as Assistant Professors in the Department of English (Dr Sadaf Siddiqui)  and Psychology (Dr Amreen Ahmed Ali) at the University of Allahabad. One alumnus (Utkarsh Dubey) from the PG course is doing PhD from the Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi and Sausan Rizvi qualified for GATE and is appearing in an interview for a PhD in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Kanpur. One of our students Dr. Malvika did guidance and counseling diploma course from SERT and doing her clinical practice in Prayagraj itself. Besides this, from the first batch of Post graduation, Saumya Shukla and Ranu Singh are working as counsellors in Kendriya Vidyalaya and in hospital settings. Kirti Tandon was also appointed as a Counsellor in Kendriya Vidyalaya. Many alumni members are at present doing internships and training programs from reputed organizations such as the Ministry of Women and Child, New Delhi and the Department of Psychiatry, Swaroop Rani Hospital, and Prayagraj. One of our students Tulika Srivastava is pursuing her PhD from IIT Guwahati, Assam. Alumni of the Department not only went for higher studies in Institutes like Allahabad University, Banaras Hindu University, and IIT Kanpur but also got selected in important competitive exams such as IAS, PCS, UGC-NET JRF, Bank Jobs and many others.

Strength of Psychology Department

The psychology department has three PhD holders and experienced faculty engaged in earnest teaching and extension activities are our major strength. The psychology department offers personal counselling to students who approach the faculty members. One of our faculty Dr. Ranjana Tiwari is RCI registered clinical psychologist and has been providing clinical counselling since 2017 to the college. The faculty members are engaged in research activities and have published research papers in UGC CARE-listed journals, Scopus, and international peer-reviewed journals with an impact factor. The department has one smart classroom, one computer lab, a departmental library, well- equipped laboratory and a free internet facility is our major strength that can help students and faculty members to explore more updated information.
